How to calculate the capacity of an industrial conveyor belt?

Get the most out of your conveyor belt capabilities

industrial conveyor belt

When putting an industrial conveyor belt into operation, it is extremely important to have knowledge of how to determine its maximum capacity. Having this information on our side will give us the opportunity to get the most out of the belt without risking damage that could affect production cycles.

Here at PPW we are experts in the manufacturing and distribution of conveyor belts.

What should I consider?

In order to adequately determine the capacities of an industrial conveyor belt, it is important to start from the following aspects:

Overload Angles and Belt Material

At this time it is important to keep in mind the material the belt is made of and what are the elements that are going to be transported by it. Well, these two aspects can greatly influence the durability, capacity and efficiency of the belt itself.

However, and in addition to the above, in order to determine the maximum resistance of the band, it is important to know the angle of repose and the angle of overload that the treadmill has.

First of all, we must bear in mind that the angle of repose is the natural angle that is formed in a material when it is dropped on a horizontal plane. On the other hand, the overload angle is the angle formed by the material in the horizontal plane of an industrial conveyor belt that is in motion.

Trough grade and belt width

It is essential to be fully aware that factors that may seem insignificant at first glance, such as the width of the belt, have great repercussions when preparing to calculate the weight that it can support.

Here it is important to keep in mind that an industrial conveyor belt that has a greater width can increase the maximum transport capacity.

Just as we must keep in mind that the degrees of trough have to go in proportion to the width of the strip in order to achieve optimum capacity.

What is the degree of trough?

The degree or angle of the trough is the one that can be formed in the vertical plane thanks to the central relationship originated by the lateral carrying rollers, in turn these have the objective of defining the maximum transport capacity; these angles they are normally 20°, 30°, 35° and 45°.

volumetric capacity

This specific data can be determined by the cubic meters per second at which an industrial conveyor belt can move depending on the angle of repose, the material it is made of, the trough angles and the width of the belt.

Formula

Once we are clear about all the aspects mentioned, it is time to get ready to calculate the capacity of an industrial conveyor belt, in order to carry out this process we will have to rely on the following formula:

IVM = IVt * Pe * K * K1) * V

Being these:

  • IVM total capacity (t/h)
  • IVt: volumetric capacity (m3/h)
  • Pe: specific weight of the material (t/m3)
  • K: tilt correction factor.
  • K1: power correction factor
  • V: belt speed in m/s [it is placed dimensionless]
