How to clean the fuel tank?

Discover everything you need to know to properly maintain your fuel tank

Fuel tank cleaning

There are many occasions where we can come to think that in order to extend the useful life of our vehicles or machinery it is necessary to have advanced mechanical knowledge. However, nothing is further from reality, with small processes that may seem insignificant on their own, such as cleaning the fuel tank, we will have the opportunity to contribute both to the performance and to the life expectancy of our tools.

Here at PPW we are the main exponents in the manufacture and distribution of this type of products and many others based on stainless steel. We recently had the opportunity to present our new series of fuel tanks. If you want to take a look, you can access it from the next button.

Why is it important to clean the fuel tank?

It is essential to be aware that the state of the tank is one of those factors that can greatly influence the performance of your engine. That is why you should clean the fuel tank from time to time, because as the months go by and with the use you give to your tool or vehicle, the interior of the fuel tank progressively fills with accumulated dirt, by settling, at the bottom of the tank itself.

If proper maintenance is not performed at the right time, it is possible that the dirt in the tank ends up permanently damaging the motors it powers. That is why we would like to tell you what is the process to follow in order to properly clean your fuel tank.

Steps to follow for cleaning the fuel tank

The process you must carry out is the following:

Disconnect the tank

Before going straight into the cleanup, it's important to disconnect the tank from the machinery you're fueling. In this way you will have the possibility of carrying out maintenance without exposing yourself to any type of risk.

Empty the gas tank

Once the tank has been disconnected from the machinery in question, it is important to pour the fuel that is still inside it, into a container that is proof of that substance. In case of not being able to completely extract all the fuel, it is recommended to use a suction hose to facilitate the process.

check the tank

Take the time necessary to be able to adequately examine all the parts of the tank, in this way you will have the possibility of detecting possible defects that may affect the proper functioning of the machinery.

clean the tank

It is recommended to use a mixture of soap and water, which does not generate much foam, to fully clean the machinery. Once the mixture is available, we proceed to pour it into the tank and shake it so that it reaches all parts of it.

After a few minutes we must empty the tank and dry it with compressed air, finally a last review is made on the tank with a lint-free towel, in order to finish cleaning the fuel tank.

waste treatment

Once the fuel tank maintenance has been carried out correctly, it is important that all residues from the cleaning process are stored and transported to some place where proper waste management can be carried out.

recommendations

  • Use the appropriate equipment prior to handling fuel or cleaning solvents, in this way you can avoid injuries or skin damage.
  • Try to carry out the process in a place that has adequate ventilation.
  • Once the cleaning of the fuel tank has been completed, check that the tank is completely dry before reinstalling it; If there is water residue left, you risk mixing it with the new fuel and causing damage to the engine or fuel system.
